Ab initio Simulations of Accretion Disc Boundary Layers

چکیده

I discuss the results of simplified three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the boundary layer between a disc and a non-rotating, unmagnetized star. Strong magnetic fields, possibly approaching equipartition with the thermal energy, occur in the boundary layer due to the shearing of disc-generated fields. The mean boundary layer magnetic field, which is highly variable on an orbital timescale, is estimated to exceed ∼50 kG for a CV with an accretion rate of 10 M⊙yr . However, these fields do not drive efficient angular momentum transport within the boundary layer. As a consequence the radial velocity in the boundary layer is low, and the density high.

Magnetic activity in accretion disc boundary layers

We use three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to study the structure of the boundary layer between an accretion disc and a non-rotating, unmagnetized star. Under the assumption that cooling is efficient, we obtain a narrow but highly variable transition region in which the radial velocity is only a small fraction of the sound speed. A large fraction of the energy dissipation occurs i...

Interface Modes and Their Instabilities in Accretion Disc Boundary Layers

We study global non-axisymmetric oscillation modes trapped near the inner boundary of an accretion disc. Observations indicate that some of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the luminosities of accreting compact objects (neutron stars, black holes and white dwarfs) are produced in the inner-most regions of accretion discs or boundary layers. Two simple models are considered in ...

On the room-temperature phase diagram of high pressure hydrogen: an ab initio molecular dynamics perspective and a diffusion Monte Carlo study.

The finite-temperature phase diagram of hydrogen in the region of phase IV and its neighborhood was studied using the ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) and the ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD). The electronic structures were analyzed using the density-functional theory (DFT), the random-phase approximation, and the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods. Taking the state-of-the-ar...

How initial and boundary conditions affect protoplanetary migration in a turbulent sub-Keplerian accretion disc: 2D non viscous SPH simulations

Current theories on planetary formation establish that giant planet formation should be contextual to their quick migration towards the central star due to the protoplanets-disc interactions on a timescale of the order of 10 years, for objects of nearly 10 terrestrial masses. Such a timescale should be smaller by an order of magnitude than that of gas accretion onto the protoplanet during the h...

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of a Fully Hydrated Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine Bilayer with Diierent Macroscopic Boundary Conditions and Parameters

We compared Molecular Dynamics simulations of a bilayer of 128 fully hydrated phospholipid (DPPC) molecules, using diierent parameters and macroscopic boundary conditions. The same system was studied under constant pressure, constant volume and constant surface tension boundary conditions, with two diierent sets of charges, the single point charge (SPC) and extended single point charge (SPC/E) ...
